Najem Wali

Najem Wali, born in Basra, Iraq, in 1956, fled to Germany in 1980 after the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war. Today he lives as a freelance author and journalist in Berlin. For a long time he was cultural correspondent of the most important Arab daily newspaper Al-Hayat and writes regularly for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Die Zeit. From Sept. 2016 to Aug. 2017 he was writer-in-residence of The City of Graz. Hanser recently published his novel „Bagdad Marlboro“ (2014), for which he was awarded the Bruno-Kreisky Prize 2014, as well as „Baghdad“ (Memories of a World City, 2015) and „Sara's Hour“ (novel, 2018).
