Alexandra Föderl-Schmid

Alexandra Föderl-Schmid, born in 1971, has been with the Süddeutsche Zeitung since September 2017 and reports on Israel and the Palestinian territories. Before that, she was editor-in-chief for ten years and later also co-editor of the Austrian daily Der Standard and the news portal derStandard.at. She has been a correspondent for a total of seventeen years, including from Germany and Brussels. She studied journalism, political science and history at the University of Salzburg and earned her doctorate on the dual broadcasting system in Germany. In 2005 she was Reuters / APA-Geiringer-Fellow in Oxford. She was awarded the Austrian Kurt Vorhofer Prize for Political Journalism, the Constitutional Award and the Ari-Rath Prize, which commemorates the former editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post. Ari Rath had to flee 1938 from Vienna to Palestine. In addition, Föderl-Schmid was instrumental in the reestablishment of the Press Council in Austria.
